Manchester United winger Ryan Giggs has confirmed that he will continue playing for the Red Devils for another season — if ever that will count as an awe-inspiring 22nd season for him.

Giggs, now at 37, has been playing “1  season contracts” for a few of years now — and speculations on whether he will continue are always numerous as spring enters. But it seems that season after season, when people are convinced that he would call it quits, he produces one sparkling performance after another — as he has done in this weekend’s 5-0 thrashing of Birmingham — making it difficult for Sir Alex Ferguson to let go of him.

Football odds for Blackpool vs Manchester United

Blackpool – 9.6

Bolton – 1.39

Draw – 5.6

Ryan Giggs, 37 and still contributing heavily to the Manchester United title charge

After a 2010 campaign in which his influence has not appeared to decline by any stretch of imagination, the veteran Welshman has revealed he has no plans to retire in the summer.

“I am quite happy still playing at the moment and enjoying my football as much as ever,” Giggs said. “I said if I was still enjoying myself and still getting picked I would carry on. We will sit down and talk but I am really looking forward to playing next year.”

Ryan Giggs is attempting to win a record 12th league title this season to go alongside his two European Cups and the countless other trophies on his mantlepiece. With Manchester United firmly on top of the Premier League table — with a number of games in hand — he could make that record a reality come end of season. United are also still involved in the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League — more chances for Giggs to add to his trophy haul.

Many people have lauded Giggs’ sense of loyalty — all these years he has ever only worn the Manchester United shirt, him and fellow teammate Paul Scholes showing the younger generation a thing or two about team loyalty. This is indeed a far cry from the youngsters today who seemingly want to cash in on their talents before they retire of old age.

Manchester United play one of their games in hand this Tuesday against Premier League newcomers and surprise package Blackpool. This fixture was canceled in its original schedule in December because of the adverse weather conditions that gripped the UK that month.  United are still unbeaten this season, and last weekend’s demolition of Birmingham confirm that they are still the force to be reckoned with at the top tier of English football. The betting odds for Blackpool vs Manchester United is such that even betting for draw is considered a high risk game, what with Dimitar  Berbatov hitting Birmingham for another hat trick last weekend and Rooney approaching his top form. We say an away win for Man Utd is in order.

The Steelers defeated the Jets’ with a dominant first half for a 24-3 edge. James Harrison, shut down the Jets’ comeback in the fourth quarter to seal the victory. The Green Bay Packers defeated the Chicago Bears to win the NFC football championship and get their ticket to the Super Bowl 2011, aka SUPERBOWL XLV, the 45th annual celebration of American football league’s gruelling 17 weeks of regular season and 4 weeks of post season madness.

Final Score: Packers 21, Bears 14. note: the Packers were 3 point underdogs going into the game. Green Bay Packers vs Chicago Bears NFC 2011 video highlights.

Rodgers, Aaron Green Bay PackersThis time around, it was new quarter back Aaron Rodgers and not Brett Favre who won the game for the Pack. Aaron Rodgers was equally impressive as the classic young Favre during his heyday, He ran for a touchdown. He made a touchdown-saving tackle. And he was better than three Bears quarterbacks in leading the Green Bay Packers to the Super Bowl with an ugly-but-beautiful 21-14 victory Sunday over the Chicago Bears.

It was the 182nd meeting in the league’s most historic rivalry, and the stakes had never been bigger. The Packers (13-6) are now headed to Dallas, Texas for Super Bowl XLV, holding ultimate bragging rights over their rivals to the South. The Packers will play the winner of Sunday night’s AFC title game between the New York Jets and Pittsburgh Steelers.

Rodgers proved ready for the biggest day of his brief but impressive career as the successor to Brett Favre(notes), even if his final stat line didn’t look impressive after an ugly, hard-fought game. He threw for 244 yards with two interceptions, but his play in the first half put the Bears in a hole as their defense that seemed to fall for every play-action fake.

Green Bay Packers @ Chicago Bears- January 23
Brett Favre’s season is quite something, but Rodgers is still working on his season, the Green Bay Packers can yell out a big fat “we told you so”. Rodgers is the real deal and he is the future of the franchise. Rodgers on quarterback has proven he’s a winner, but is Aaron Rodgers a champion quarterback? He will lead his team into Soldier Field on Sunday to beats Jay Cutler in his backyard, can he do it? Those are the shoes Rodgers has to fill in and he will get some help. The Packers defense lead by Clay “Bloodline” Mathews and Charles Woodson is dynamite, and no one has been able to keep Mathews out of the backfield making big plays. If Rodgers can get that offense humming the Packers look damn tough.

Green Bay Packers vs Chicago Bears NFl Football Game Odds

This Packers Bears game is only the second time in history the Packers have met the Bears in the NFlL football playoffs, and the last time the Bears were the ones who came out on top. Cutler will be no doubt looking to have history repeat itself, as this game adds a little more incentive for him to fully establish himself the premier QB in the NFL.

They say young British footballers are overpriced — the fact that they are British given to inflating selling prices to unbelievable amounts. You only need to look at Manchester City‘s purchase of Joleon Lescott, still flattering to deceive on current form, as an example. Or the slumping Michael Carrick, bought by Manchester United from Tottenham for a double figure million-something sum, of whom many would say that he still has to justify why Sir Alex splurged that amount for him. There are many examples of English lads with bloated prices but fail to perform — Sunderland‘s Jordan Henderson is determined to buck that trend.

Sunderland's young midfielder Jordan Henderson

Making his debut yesterday at the England vs France friendly, Sunderland manager Steve Bruce is already saying that he will be facing a battle  trying to keep the youngster in Sunderland — he has gone on record of saying he will not sell for any amount less than 25 million quid. With next weks game in mind — betting odds on Sunderland vs Everton slightly going the Northeasterners’ way due to their thrashing of champions Chelsea last weekend.

But is Jordan Henderson the real deal? Here is what Bruce says of him:

…he is a very quiet lad himself and his attitude is so refreshing. This is a lad who isn’t going to get himself into trouble.”Little wonder when you put all these qualities together he is courted by all the top clubs. Perhaps I shouldn’t say this, and it is my problem, but now he is also playing for England it is going to be so hard to keep him at Sunderland, but I will try. It will be a fight, though.

“Jordan was fantastic when he played for the Under-21s when Fabio Capello watched him in the stands, and you can see why all the clubs have asked to be kept informed.”

He can pass, defend, pass some more, and score the odd goal or two. Seems to have the right ingredients to be the real deal.

“For someone who is just 20, who has already played so much in the Premier League, and now for England, you would have to say why would you want to sell him for anything less than £25 million? He has an awful lot ahead of him, much more to come from him, so it would be good value for a top club,” he said.

“But equally he has to think about his career. He still has to work at his game and he needs to be playing regularly. He has to be mindful of Adam Johnson, moving from Middlesbrough to a top club like Manchester City and then not getting as many games as he would like, or that he needs, so it isn’t always best to take the seemingly obvious move.

“If this boy continues the way he is then I am convinced he will be as good as Gerrard, as good as Lampard.”

Big words indeed, and time will only tell if the young Henderson will live up to the hype. In the mean time, he will have his work cut out for him, as Sunderland face an imporving Everton side on Monday next week.

Sunderland vs Everton football odds

Sunderland – 2.66

The Pittsburgh Steelers will be looking to bounce back from their Week 8 loss to New Orleans and hand their reeling AFC North division rivals, the Cincinnati Bengals, their fifth consecutive loss when they take to the gridiron at Paul Brown Stadium for their Monday Night Football matchup that could potentially put them all alone in first place in the division.

The AFC North was a three-team race to the finish last season between the Bengals, Steelers and Baltimore Ravens that was expected to be one again this season – until the Bengals came out playing the same brand of lethargic football they’ve shown all season long.

Now, the Steelers are locked in a tie with the Ravens for first place in the division and know they can use a victory in this divisional showdown to help them get back the division crown they lost to Cincinnati last season.

Pittsburgh (5-2 SU, 4-3 ATS, 3-4 O/U)

Pittsburgh had its modest two-game winning streak snapped in its uninspiring 20-10 loss to New Orleans on Sunday and come into this Monday Night matchup riding a two-game ATS losing streak. Pittsburgh has also gone 2-2 against the Over/Under betting line over the last four games.

The Steelers are ranked fifth in total defense, but just 27th in offense, including a dismal 29th in passing.

Cincinnati (2-5 SU, 2-5 ATS, 4-3 O/U)

Cincinnati has lost four consecutive games, including a dismal 22-14 loss to Miami on Sunday.

The Bengals failed to cover the NFL sports betting odds as a 1-point home underdog and come into this Monday Night Football matchup having gone 0-4 ATS over their last four games while playing Over the set O/U total for the first time after three straight Unders.

The Bengals are ranked in the bottom third in almost every meaningful defensive statistical category despite fielding the league’s sixth-best passing attack.

Veteran quarterback Carson Palmer has thrown a dozen TD passes but has mixed in seven interceptions along the way while completing just under 60 percent of his passes.

Analysis: The Bengals may have swept the Steelers in the regular season a year ago, but I like Pittsburgh in this Monday Night Football showdown.

The Steelers have won seven of the last 10 meetings against the Bengals while posting a blistering 7-1-1 ATS mark in their last nine games against the Bengals in Cincinnati.

The Steelers have gone 5-2 ATS in their last seven meetings overall while the Road team has compiled an even hotter 12-4-1 ATS mark in the last 17 meetings between these longtime NFC North division rivals.

Bet on the Steelers to cover the NFL point spread in this Monday Night Football matchup against a Cincinnati Bengals team that has far underachieved against their title-contending expectations.

NFl Football Game Of The WeekThe Texas Rangers are going to the 2010 MLB World Series after beating the defending champion New York Yankees, no less than their arch nemesis for the longest time.

The Texas Rangers won Game 6 of the American League Series, the World Series first game will be held on Texas grounds. With a score of 6-1 vs the New York Yankees, this game is the biggest victory in the Rangers baseball franchise’s 50 seasons.

Colby Lewis(notes) dominated over eight innings for his second win of the series and Josh Hamilton(notes) earned the ALCS MVP award.

An MLB baseball American League championship is quite a feat for the franchise that began in 1961 as the expansion Washington Senators. They moved to Texas in 1972 with Ted Williams as their manager.

MLB Baseball 2010 - Texas Rangers hoist ALCS Trophy vs New York Yankees

MLB Baseball 2010 - Texas Rangers manager hoist ALCS Trophy after defeating New York Yankees

By reaching the World Series in the franchise’s 50th season, the last 39 in Texas, it marks the longest it has taken a club to get there for the first time. Montreal/Washington (42 seasons) and Seattle (34) haven’t yet made it.

Before going the full five games in the 2010 American League division series this season to beat Tampa Bay Devil Rays for their first-ever postseason series victory, the Rangers had been knocked out of the playoffs by New York in 1996, 1998 and 1999—and the Yankees went on to win the World Series each time.

The Rangers will await the winner of the NL series between the San Francisco Giants and the Philadelphia Phillies.

NFl Football Game Of The WeekSan Diego Chargers -2 ½ vs. New England Patriots – 73% of football handicappers believe that the Pats are one of the better NFL Week 7 picks this Sunday to cover the spread. Not me.

Maybe, I just love to be disappointed by my favoritist player, QB Phillip Rivers. Who wouldn’t with that snarky grin of his? Anyhow…the Pats’ D gives up, on average, close to 275 yards through the air and close to 110 yards on the ground. Rivers might deserve to provide the snarky grin this week.

Cincinnati Bengals +3 ½ vs. Atlanta Falcons – The Philadelphia Eagles thoroughly embarrassed the Falcons’ pass D last Sunday when racking up 31 points and 320 yards through the air.

I have to believe that the Bengals, coming off of a bye week, will be ready to take advantage of the Falcons’ secondary. The Bengals average close to 250 yards through the air as it is. They should be ready to put a beat down on the Falcons and might be one of the better NFL Week 7 picks on the moneyline.

St. Louis Rams +2 ½ vs. Tampa Bay Buccaneers – The Bucs were simply beaten up by the New Orleans Saints last Sunday. Sure, the Saints are a very good team and appear to have found their groove, but St. Louis has won 3 games in a row and their offense, with rookie QB Sam Bradford under center, is averaging 315 yards per game.

TB still hasn’t found a legit RB, they average only 90 yards per game on the ground, and their D gives up way to many rush yards, close to 160 per game. The Rams should roll.

San Francisco 49’ers -3 vs. Carolina Panthers – The line might end up at SF -4 when it’s all said and done. So, jump on this one early is my advice. The Niners’ D shut down a much better offense, Oakland’s, last Sunday in a 17 to 9 victory last week.

The Panthers are coming off of a bye but they just don’t have the personnel to take down SF. SF RB Frank Gore should dominate that Panther D that allows 134 yards per game on the ground.
